The purpose of smooth wheel rollers is to flatten and smooth uneven surfaces, making them useful in various industries. It uses vibration, static pressure and impact to compact materials such as sand, gravel and other aggregates and is ideal for crushing softer aggregates and compacting asphalt pavements. Smooth wheel rollers consist of a large smooth steel wheel at the front, two wheels at the rear, and a cab that allows the operator to adjust the settings for the specific project. As part of this engaging simulation, participants will operate a smooth wheel roller and complete a variety of tasks on an active construction site.

Overview and activities:

Participants will first read an overview and learn about key components inside and outside the vehicle, safety tips and the basics of inspection before using any heavy machinery. Participants will engage in category matching activities to enhance understanding of key controls and their location within the vehicle.

Participant simulation:

Interactive operating simulations allow participants to explore, learn and practice operating a backhoe in a safe and realistic manner. Before starting the simulation mission, participants must don personal protective equipment (PPE), perform a pre-operational inspection of the vehicle, and complete a task to familiarize themselves with the vehicle’s operation.
